BECAUSE WE CARE

When making great chocolate you also need to DO great in the making of your product.

We take our responsibilities very serious and for the last couple of years we have been – and still is – on a journey with full attention to fair trades for our cocoa farmers, their families and local communities, the environment and a greener world, reduction of CO2 and work environment. To name a few.

CHOCOLATE THAT TASTES OF A BETTER LIFE

Even though Simply Chocolate is a true Copenhagen-based company, our responsibilities go far beyond Denmark’s borders. All the way to Africa and The Ivory Coast where the cocoa for our chocolate grows. This is why we’re part of Cocoa Horizons, a non-profit organization working to ensure that the cocoa farmers, their families and the local communities surrounding the cocoa fields thrive and have the opportunity to better their lives. This makes our chocolate bars a bit more expensive than the rest of the pack but we don’t want to produce and sell chocolate with an aftertaste of underpayment of human beings and exploitation of nature.

A GREENHOUSE THAT GROWS A NEW FUTURE

In the middle of the jungle near a village in The Ivory Coast stands a greenhouse. Here, a group of local women are growing vegetables and fruit. But they are also growing a new future. In addition to ensuring the women a more stable income, the produce is served as lunch in the local school, making sure the children get a good meal and more energy for their education. Simply Chocolate sponsors the greenhouse project, so when buying our chocolate you’re actually giving back to the cocoa farmers and their families.

AT SIMPLY CHOCOLATE THE SUN IS OUR BEST FRIEND

Usually the sun is one of chocolate’s worst enemies as both sunlight and the heat from the rays destroys chocolate. But at Simply Chocolate the two are actually best friends, as we have had our very own solar panel system installed on our roof. This makes us 100% energy self-sufficient when the sun shines, ensuring we can produce chocolate with zero CO2 emissions. Yes, we save on the energy bill but most importantly, we help the climate staying healthy, ensuring we will continue to be able grow cocoa beans. And we will, since we simply cannot imagine a world without chocolate. Can you?

ALWAYS 100% SURE OF WHAT GOES INTO OUR CHOCOLATE

Unfortunately, cocoa beans can’t grow here in Copenhagen so naturally we depend on great suppliers when producing our chocolates. This makes it essential for us to be sure of everything that is used in our production, and making demands of our suppliers and the ingredients we purchase from them. When choosing suppliers, we evaluate them thoroughly on eight different points: Price, delivery, quality, reachability, innovation, CSR, child labour and documentation. This enables us to keep 100% track of what goes into the chocolate that carries our name.

LITTLE DETAILS WITH A HUGE ENVIRONMENTALLY IMPACT

To be a climate friendly chocolate factory is also about remembering the little things, as they as a whole makes a huge difference for the environment. At Simply Chocolate, we took a tour of our facilities and found the spots we could improve on to minimise our negative environmental impact. For instance, we have intelligent LED lighting, adapting to the daylight and switching off automatically, we have optimized our energy consumption in the production facilities, and we’re on top of our waste sorting. And we continue to work on becoming more sustainable because no one can do everything, but everyone can do something.

PACKAGING WITH RESPECT FOR MORE THAN CHOCOCLATE

At Simply Chocolate we’re part of an industry which traditionally uses a lot and a lot of non-sustainable packaging. That’s why we’re hellbent on reaching our goal of 100% reusable packaging. But we depend on both boxes and wrappers taking good care of the content, since even the most beautiful and well-tempered chocolate becomes grey and loses its snap if it’s not properly wrapped.
With some products we’ve already reached our goal of full reusability, other places we’re still testing the possibilities, ensuring that the sustainable solution is in sync with both food safety and quality. Compromising is not a part of the recipe at Simply Chocolate.

SMALL PROJECTS MAKING SWEET MOMENTS

A huge smile, a hug and a couple of great chocolates. Sometimes that is all it takes to spread the optimism. At Simply Chocolate, Copenhagen’s own chocolate factory, we know this. And to be a true Copenhagen business is to be part of the local community—creating a sweet moment for those needing a break from reality. That’s why we do ‘mini sponsorships’, making chocolate deliveries to children’s hospices, retirement homes and sport clubs. We simply love sharing our chocolate happiness!

SIMPLY CHOCOLATE
X COPENHAGEN 2021

Under the slogan ‘With Love From CPH’ Simply Chocolate is sponsoring Copenhagen 2021. Why? Because our chocolate heart beats for all colours, genders and sexualities. So far, the collaboration includes a limited edition chocolate bar and a part of the earnings goes to the work of World Pride. We have done this because we truly believe the freedom to love another human being is a human right always worth fighting for.
Stand with us in this fight by purchasing Love Bar — for yourself and the one you love.

A WORKING ENVIRONMENT THAT WORKS

A lot of chocolate producers make a big to-do about their ingredients. The high cocoa percentage and the thoughtful process. However, we would like to talk about being a thoughtful employer, ensuring our employees a great working environment, union agreement and happy colleagues.
Part of the reason why we built our factory in Copenhagen is to preserve good Danish jobs. With emphasis on good. That’s why everyone has a union agreement, just as we have hired people on flexibility terms or with diagnoses. We believe that everyone need to experience the joy and success of doing paid work. And we believe that joy makes our chocolate taste even better.
